Today the Federal Government’s mandatory vaccination policy comes into effect across the country. The efforts of aged care workers in getting vaccinated have been incredible, from those who have been working during COVID outbreaks, living through local curfews, or the day-to-day stresses of the job.
Today’s vaccination rates in aged care are a credit to the commitment and strength of aged care workers.
However, some aged care workers have made the decision to leave the sector rather than get the jab. Some aged care workers have been stood down from work while they consider their position.
The aged care sector is already understaffed. Any aged care worker leaving the sector puts additional stress on the remaining workforce. I have serious concerns about what the impact this will have on you and your colleagues.
I want to hear from you about what’s happening in your workplace: survey here
If your workplace is experiencing workload stress because of understaffing, then the Federal Government needs to step up.
We need to attract new workers to the sector. We need to ensure that there are save staffing levels for residents and workers alike.
If the Federal Government can mandate vaccinations, then it can mandate better wages to attract and retain aged care workers. It can mandate safe staffing levels.

Finally, I want to acknowledge the work you continue to do in keeping our most vulnerable safe. The last few months have been stressful, and we aren’t through it yet. If you need any support or advice, contact our Member Services Division on 1300 478 679 or email [E-Mail not displayed].
