Important information for HSU members working as Aboriginal Health Workers

The HSU is currently in consultation with the Ministry of Health on a Determination to support the recruitment of staff to the classification of Aboriginal Health Worker under the NSW Health Service Aboriginal Health Workers (State) Award (the Award).

At the time of appointment to the classification of Aboriginal Health Worker, the applicant’s previous employment that may be recognised as service for determining commencement rate of pay may include, but is not limited to previous employment in:

  •  Work providing health services, including to Aboriginal people, whether directly or where their role has been to facilitate relationships between Aboriginal patients and health professionals and/or
  • Work with Aboriginal people or communities involving community liaison and engagement, advocacy, health promotion and education or other community development.

This experience will be considered for setting the commencement rate of pay for Aboriginal Health Workers

What does this mean for current members?

If you are already employed in NSW Health in the classification of Aboriginal Health Worker you may apply to have your previous employment, as described above, reviewed if your previous employment was not previously recognised as service when you commenced in your role.

Any change in your rate of pay as a result of this review will take effect from the date of the decision of that review. The HSU is seeking comments from members about the proposed determination. If the Determination proceeds, we will let members know how they can seek a review if this applies to them. If you have any comments or questions please contact Ayshe Lewis at the HSU at [E-Mail not displayed] by cob 9 January 2023
