It has come to the attention of the Health Services Union that a new ‘12 hour shift’ roster was introduced for House 2 and House 3, without any consultation with staff. We understand that this was due to ‘staff shortages’.
While the Aged Care Award does allow your employer to change roster at any time in the case of an emergency, if your employer wants to change an your regular roster or ordinary hours of work, they have to consult you about it first.
This means that management must invite employees who could be impacted to give their views about the impact of the change and the feedback of the employees must be considered.
You also have the right to refuse working unreasonable overtime and you have the right to say no to unsafe work. Unsafe work could include working excessively long shifts which cause you to be fatigued and reduces your ability to perform your work safely and effectively.
Contact your union if you have any concerns or questions. Tell your workmates who are not a member yet to join the HSU. Only members are represented. New members can join at www.hsu.asn.au/join or by calling 1300 478 679.
