Breaking: Commission sets dates for Work Value pay increase

Last night the Fair Work Commission handed down its long-awaited decision on the rollout of the remaining Aged Care Work Value increases to wages.

Disappointingly, the FWC determined to phase in the remaining increases over 10 months, commencing from 1 January 2025. This is despite significant lobbying from aged care workers over the past months, and the Commission agreeing that aged care workers are undervalued right now. You can see the full decision here.

However, there will be additional increases to all Awards (on top of the Work Value increases) from next Monday, as a result of the Annual Wage Review which delivered a 3.75% increase to federal awards.

What does this mean for aged care workers?

This means that the minimum safety net of the Award will increase several times over the next 15 months. Remember, you cannot be paid less than the minimum Award pay rate for your classification.

Next Steps

There are a number of changes about classifications that are still being worked through. Over the coming weeks we will host several member information sessions to discuss the changes to the classification structure and how this may affect you.

This is not the outcome that members deserve. However, we cannot lose sight of the incredible work of HSU members in delivering such a monumental outcome to the sector. The change HSU members have fought for through this case has brought dignity, professional recognition, union strength and organisation – and it must never be forgotten.

And our fight for a better aged care sector doesn’t stop here. Please join us online or in your workplace to discuss the outcome of this decision and plan our next steps in the fight for dignity and respect for all aged care workers.
