SydPath couriers are celebrating the imminent receipt of $200,000 backpay owed to them by St.Vincent’s Hospital, following their transfer of employment from St. Vincent’s Private Hospital to St. Vincent’s Public Hospital.
This win is a great example of your Union’s importance in ensuring members are treated fairly and correctly remunerated for the work they perform. The HSU argued that statutory requirements were not met at the time of transfer, which was early last year. The average amount of backpay per courier is approximately $12,500.
Individual members identified discrepancies in their pay upon transfer but were unable to have this rectified. They turned to the HSU to represent them and to ensure that they would be correctly classified and paid by their new employer. Without the HSU’s intervention, they would have continued to be underpaid.
This is a lesson for all HSU members. If you believe you are being unfairly treated, underpaid, subjected to unreasonable workloads or unacceptable workplace behaviour, stand together as HSU members and take collective action. You can achieve positive and lasting change.
Do you have colleagues who are not yet members of the HSU? More than ever, now is the time to ask them to join.
Health workers are facing enormous pressures as they respond to COVID-19. Change and ever-increasing demands are common. Union membership gives you strong protection and representation for you at work. New members can join at www.hsu.asn.au/join or call 1300 478 679.
