About the role

As a Research Officer, you will play a pivotal role in advancing our mission to advocate for HSU members across NSW/ACT/QLD. You will undertake comprehensive research on health and industrial policies, transforming data into insightful analysis that supports our strategic campaigns. Your work will directly influence our advocacy efforts, enhancing our presence in public policy discussions. In the process, you will collaborate with HSU staff and members, engage with key external stakeholders, and stay informed on emerging trends to ensure our strategies remain effective and evidence-based. This is a 6-month fixed term position based in our Sydney CBD Head Office.

Responsibilities:

  • Prepare strategic, evidence-based research, reports, briefing papers, and publications in fitting with the union’s priorities.
  • Prepare policy submissions to government inquiries and assist in the development of policy positions.
  • Liaise with members and delegates to conduct quantitative and qualitative research.
  • Monitor and map industries and employers to support organising goals and membership growth.
  • Map and analyse stakeholders and identify opportunities for engagement.
  • Develop research on industries, employers, and relevant issues by drawing on government, corporate, industry, financial, economic, and policy data.
  • Undertake administrate tasks in support of the union’s research program.

Essential Skills and Experience:

  • Honours or post-graduate qualifications in health, labour, politics, economics, industrial relations or public policy.
  • Understanding of union organising, health policy debates, economic issues, and policy and relevant regulatory frameworks.
  • Demonstrated skills in undertaking formal research
  • High level computer skills with a capacity to distil research into presentable formats.
  • Strong analytical skills, and an ability to source a wide range of corporate, industry, financial, economic, and policy data, and synthesise relevant facts and issues.
  • Ability to develop and implement research plans and provide strategic advice.

Remuneration:

  • $90,434 - $96,670 + 11.5% (12% for females) Employee Superannuation Contributions dependant on relevant skills and experience.
